A bathroom renovation is one of the most rewarding home upgrades but it is also a project that can temporarily disrupt your daily routine. Whether you are updating a powder room or completely transforming a master bath, knowing what to expect during the renovation process can help you prepare and reduce stress. El Don Home Improvement will breakdown what typically happens during a bathroom renovation project, so you’ll know exactly what to anticipate from day one to the final reveal.
Bathroom Planning & Design
Before any work begins, your project starts with planning and design. You will begin with consultations with a designer or contractor, measurements and layout discussions and election of materials. You will also need to determine budget estimates and timeline development and obtain any permits needed. Don’t rush this stage as it lays the foundation for the rest of your renovation.
Demolition
Once the design is finalized, it’s time to tear out the old. Demolition removal of old fixtures, tiles, flooring, and cabinets. There will be dust and noise so expect some mess, even with containment measures. During demolition expect some possible discovery of unknown issues. Clear out personal items from the bathroom in advance and protect adjacent areas with plastic sheeting or drop cloths.
Plumbing & Electrical Rough-Ins
Behind-the-scenes work comes next. You will need licensed plumbers and electricians to install or reroute pipes and wiring. Placement of new outlets, lighting, exhaust fans, or heated flooring. If you are changing the bathroom layout, this stage may take longer due to reconfiguration.
Framing & Subfloor Repairs
This is when any needed repairs or upgrades to the structure are completed. During this stage there may be framing for new walls or supports, replacement or reinforcement of subfloor and preparation for waterproofing and tile installation. This step is especially important in older homes where hidden damage may be uncovered.
Installing Walls, Tile & Flooring
Now the space starts to come together visually. During this stage the cement board or drywall installation, waterproofing of shower and bath areas, tile installation on walls and floors and grouting, sealing, and drying time. Custom tile patterns or large-format tiles may take longer to install so plan accordingly.
Painting & Finishing Touches
With the messy work done, it’s time to polish the space. This is when the wall painting or wallpaper is installed, touch-ups to trim, ceiling, or accent areas and installation of accessories like towel bars and mirrors. Choose paint specifically made for bathrooms moisture-resistant and mold-inhibiting.
Walkthrough & Inspection
Before closing out the project, your contractor will do a final walkthrough. You will get to review the work to ensure it meets expectations, testing plumbing and electrical systems. Don’t be shy in pointing out anything that needs fixing before you make the final payment.
How Long Does a Bathroom Renovation Take?
A typical bathroom renovation takes anywhere from 2 to 4 weeks once construction starts, depending on the complexity of the project, availability of materials, and whether structural or plumbing changes are needed.
